Catalogue note
Fields of ochre, oxblood and slate laid in with a loaded brush and worked wet into wet at the boundaries, the canvas weave left visible at the lower edge. Unsigned; a studio stamp to the reverse of the stretcher. Offered as by an American School painter of the period, without an attribution the department cannot support.

On its original stretcher and unlined. Stable throughout. A small area of cupping at the lower left, approximately 1 in. square, not flaking. No retouching. Frame later, waxed oak, with minor handling marks.
Ultraviolet. No retouching fluoresces anywhere on the surface.
