HC-2601 · The programme

Old Master Paintings & European Works of Art

Painting and sculpture from the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth, catalogued over four months. Lots close in sequence at two-minute intervals from the stated time; a bid inside the final three minutes extends that lot by three minutes.

The house

Ten departments, and a specialist behind each

An attribution is stated at the strength the evidence bears and no higher. A restoration is described as a restoration. The house has been doing it this way since 1897.

Before you bid

Everything that decides what you pay, printed

01

The increment table

Bids step by a published ladder, not a percentage. Under $200 the step is $10; at a million it is $100,000. The next admissible bid is printed on every live lot, and the clerk will not take a figure between two rungs.

02

The buyer’s premium

The hammer price is not the price. A premium of 27% is added on the first million, falling on a regressive scale above that. Every lot page shows the whole working and the true total.

03

The reserve

A confidential minimum below which the seller has instructed us not to sell. It may never exceed the low estimate. We publish whether it has been met — not what it is.

Conditions of sale

04

Anti-sniping

A bid inside the final three minutes of a timed lot extends that lot by three minutes, and only that lot. A sale should be won by the highest bidder, not by the fastest connection.

Hammer prices are stated before the buyer’s premium. The total paid by the buyer is the hammer price plus the premium on the scale set out in the conditions of sale. Every figure on this table is fictional and is printed to show how the house publishes a season, not to record one.
